 New film from Fierce Productions
One to look out for: At a time when young black London is hitting the news for crime and violence, a new British made film TOP GIRL tells the story of girls growing up in a man’s world.

Brixton girls Donna and Felicia are inseparable best friends but aspiring MC Donna is unquestionably TOP GIRL. Truthful, tender and punctuated by ill advised sexual encounters, TOP GIRL is a naively comic story of deep and lasting friendship.

TOP GIRL is a film by Fierce Productions, an award-winning not-for-profit company working with young people. 20 plus young people understudied a professional crew in making the film and were also an integral part of developing the script and story.

Says Fierce Director Rebecca Johnson ‘TOP GIRL is the second film we’ve shot on Stockwell Park Estate, in the heart of Brixton. In a way both films are love songs to my local community but the themes they address are universal’.

Rebecca’s documentary HOME TURF, also made with and on the estate, was
recently screened to great acclaim at the National Film Theatre. Her drama THAT SINKING FEELING netted international prizes and award nominations and FAST BREAK won the First Light Best Drama award in 2007.

TOP GIRL stars Rumbi Mautsi and Naomi Lewis, two major new talents, alongside established actors Alexis Rodney (Life and Lyrics) and Jay Brown (A Class Apart). It also features a blink-and-you’ll miss it cameo from veteran black British actor Victor Romero Evans (Storm Damage). The soundtrack is by the excellent Skwilla Gee of SWGs and also features the unreleased Major/Mz Bratt grimey remix of Mutya’s Just A Little Bit.

TOP GIRL will be submitted to major film festivals internationally including Sundance.

For more information about Fierce Productions, please go to www.fierceproductions.co.uk or contact Rebecca@fierceproductions.co.uk

March 10th, two legends release new albums
Braintax has received a bit of press and some notes in the forums about his third album, released today entitled 'My Last And Best Album, an entirely C-Swing (Colin Emmanual) produced album announcing Joey Brains' retirement. He's come under criticism from various areas in the scene (or not) recently about his actions as artist and label owner but a new Braintax LP should always be something to check out. Out now on Lowlife and available just about everywhere.

Something that may have slipped under your radar though is a new album by the legendary MCD, someone who's been around since 91 and still releasing material. His new album 'Binary Code' is on Swiss label, Mouthwatering Records, a self produced 17 track genre hopping epic with a good looking guestlist including Roots Manuva, Tubby T, Skeme, Million Dan, the Ragga Twins and erm, Michelle Gayle amongst others. Distributed by Kudos in the UK it's one to check out, mouthwateringrecords

Seen, every writers favorite old skool writer, is back in the UK with a new exhibition...

The press release reads ' This eye-catching and provocative exhibition reiterates his position as the leading proponent of the long controversial hybrid of art and vandalism, while proving involving and surprisingly fresh'.

So do get yourself down to the StolenSpace Gallery, being careful not to jump the expected queue of ageing writers patiently waiting to meet Seen!

 New Rawkus 50 project
As one of hip hop’s most trusted brands, Rawkus Records is selecting 50 unsigned artists ideally suited to represent the Rawkus label in a brand new project for producers looking to step up their game.

The RAWKUS 50 will receive the consistent marketing efforts of the founders of Rawkus Records. First, Rawkus Records will consolidate the cumulative fan-bases in the interests of the cooperative. Then, Rawkus will market the RAWKUS 50 as a whole, while maintaining the essential one-on-one focus given to individual artist development.

Slop Funk Dust, content manager of the RAWKUS 50 laments 'When have you ever heard of a respectable record label accepting unsolicited material from the general public? I could send my demo to Def Jam, but it's just gonna end up on someone’s floor.' The Rawkus guys are loading up their IPods and listening to submissions like mad men. This is the perfect opportunity for that one guy, that’s been recording albums in his basement and posting his videos on youtube. It is also perfect for artists that are already established and have followings and are just interested and hungry. For those established artists this can be a way better outlet than mixtapes.

Artists chosen for one of the coveted 50 spots MUST have developed Myspace communities and sufficient Youtube (or equivalent) links.
Non-prolific artists need not apply. If you cannot consistently create and churn out dope music, the Rawkus 50 is not for you!

Artists must submit and deliver a minimum of 10 mastered tracks for one album. Rawkus Records will promote and market the album.
Please submit all entries for Rawkus 50 to: music@rawkus.com for the attention of Slopfunkdust.

Big Dada Are 10 Years Old! And We Have a CD/DVD Prize To Be Won!
Big Dada are 10 years old. And to celebrate they are releasing 2 CD's and a stand alone DVD, with a specially comissined 30-min documentary featuring all their videos.

And we are giving away a set in a very special competition! Just answer this question; If i'm the son of Big Dada and you're my first cousin, what's your old man's relation to Big Dada? Please send answers to the usual address.

Well Deep: Ten Years of Big Dada Recordings - Released 15th October
A Double CD and DVD (To be sold separately)

Big Dada, home of some of the most maverick, forward-thinking and innovative artists in hip hop and beyond has just hit double figures. And to celebrate, they're proud to present "Well Deep," not so much a 'best of' as an overview of the label's history and philosophy, available on double CD and DVD.

Big Dada was started when then-music journalist Will Ashon approached Peter Quicke (boss of Ninja Tune) and suggested a hip hop label to run alongside but independently of the venerable indie. Heavily influenced by the underground hip hop scenes that had grown up in LA in the early nineties and then New York in the mid-nineties, Ashon envisaged the label as a home for musical misfits and pioneers, for those who were more interested in producing something worthwhile than necessarily having a hit.

Whilst "underground hip hop" became shorthand for a kind of nostalgic belief in "real hip hop" and dusty samples, Big Dada continued to evolve. Ashon maintains, though, that the label has stayed true to its founding principles. "I always thought the basic principle of hip hop was to keep moving, to constantly be trying something new. To be fresher than everyone else!"

Certainly, few labels have operated such a broad-church policy to rap-based music, both in terms of style and geography. How many labels could claim to have had a consistent music policy over ten years while releasing artists as diverse as Wiley and cLOUDDEAD? How many labels could justify releasing French group TTC, Diplo's early Brazilian experiments, some of the finest acts to come out of the UK (Roots Manuva, Ty, New Flesh, Infinite Livez), as well as some of the finest underground acts to emerge from the USA (Spank Rock, King Geedorah/MF Doom, Mike Ladd's Infesticons project) in addition to some of the most wildly offbeat (Bigg Jus, Busdriver)?
