Louis Unseen Never Unheard EP
Louis Unseen is an upcoming young producer from Bristol. ‘Never Unheard’ is a 4-track EP featuring vocals from Verbal Remedy, Mr Prophecy (both of Sons of South fame), Mp3dom and Hannah C. It’s short but it’s sweet.
We start with ‘Get Over’ featuring Verbal Remedy. There’s a little guitar and piano here and sweet sounding vocal samples. The drum programming is really on point here too. It’s a nice, bright, soulful start to the EP and sets the mood well. It’s a slow one too and Verbal Remedy is very relaxed which suits the track well.
Next up is ‘Butter Filth’ featuring Mp3dom. There’s a strong reggae influence on this one, and I have to say it’s probably my favourite track on the EP. Once again the production is top notch. Everything sounds clear and focused and you can’t help but nod your head to this one. Mp3dom rides the beat perfectly and it’s a real treat when the horns drop in for the hook.
‘Rhyme Space’ is a soft, introspective track featuring Mr Prophecy. Underlined by a melancholy flute sample it’s a nice way to bring the EP down a level or two after the first couple tracks, which are really “sunny day” songs. The last song, ‘Thunder’, is a much darker affair than the rest of the EP. Mp3dom and Hannah C cover the vocal duties on this one and they do a good job. Mp3dom sounds particularly angry and Hannah C’s vocals are really quite ‘90s (in a good way).
There’s a lot of variety to the beats here and they all sound equally professional – compositionally and technically. The production is always clean and tidy and there’s a good balance to the mixing. The vocalists all do a top class job and the tracks sound like actual songs, rather than just some rhymes over beats. It’s well thought-out, well-executed and just plain dope.
So, all in all ‘Never Unheard’ is a good introduction to the beats and production of Louis Unseen, and I hope that’s all it is – an introduction. Because I’m very keen to hear more, especially being from Bristol myself, and hope we don’t have to wait too long before we hear something more substantial - in quantity, not quality. Hopefully his name is just a name and Louis doesn’t remain Unseen for too much longer. Find it and grab it!
It’s well thought-out, well-executed and just plain dope.
