Summer Sickness 2020: Outlook Origins

March 2, 2020 by Kieron Sullivan

July 30th – 3rd August 2020. Limited early bird tickets are still available here.

Now February has finally done one… We might still be a stretch away from T-shirt weather but since winter is almost dead we’re already getting hyped for summer and getting in sweaty crowds full of waved festival goers to some of the best hip hop the UK scene has to offer. With that sentiment in mind, we’re very happy to announce Outlook Origins as the first of our 2020 festival selections.

Last time we went, back in 2018, was an absolute madness. The Outlook experience was unique. The combination of Croatian sun, loved up crowds, a tonne of sick hip hop, insane boat parties and rib-cage-shaking soundsystems playing the full spectrum of bass music made for an experience different to any festival we’ve been to before.

Part of what has made Outlook iconic amongst festivals is undeniably the massive abandoned stone fort at Punta Cristo that’s been it’s home for the last decade. While Outlook regulars have been understandably sad to say goodbye to the Fort, this year’s Outlook Origins is promising to be something very special…

As the name implies, Outlook Origins is about taking the festival back to its roots. The first ever Outlook in 2008 took place at The Garden, originally located in Petrcane, but now relocated to Tisno. Fittingly this year the festival returns to its Garden beginnings and is hosting a more intimate event with its capacity greatly reduced. Embracing the spirit of returning to its core elements, this year’s event has got sourcing music for the heads on lock with 12 curators made up of true legends from their respective scenes. As last years event featured a bit of a dip in hip hop acts we were hyped to see that High Focus founder Fliptrix is amongst the Origins curators to fly the flag for the UK hip hop scene in 2020!

In addition to the man himself, the first line up announcements already promise performances from Children of Zeus, Black Josh and Coops plus a host of sick spitters across other genres including DRS, P Money, Flowdan and Lady Lykez. With the next line up announcement imminent we’re excited to see the other acts that Fliptrix has invited to the Croatian coastline.

There are still a limited number of early bird tickets available. To secure a place in the sun this year cop one here.

Concept of Thought, Hatter, Eyez, Daisy Drage – UKHH Cypher – Outlook Festival

September 18, 2018 by Kieron Sullivan

Post Outlook Business!! We linked up with Concept Of Thought (Awfer 1st with the bars and Illiterate last), Hatter, Eyez and Daisy Drage for Monday after-party vibes to give Outlook the send off it deserved. Proving that they were a bunch of pros, after five days of festival in the Croatian sun, the above mob all had some spare fire up their sleeves to record live for a UKHH cypher on CoT’s balcony. Serious Ratings.

Shouts to Tesk for the sun-soaked production.

Garms by LDN by Endz and Yoroshiku 4649.

3 Reasons not to Sleep On… LayFullStop

June 7, 2018 by Emilia Cox

In keeping with #UKHHSummerSickness, our newest contributor Emilia Cox chose one of our Outlook Festival artist recommendations for her 3 Reasons not Sleep On… piece. The melodic Mancunian rapper/singer is 100% UKHH certified fresh. Don’t Sleep!

Among the female artists killing it in the UK scene right now, one who stands out most is LayFullStop; the self proclaimed soulstress hailing from Manchester. An affiliate of Roots Raddix Records, member of the hip hop collective Cul De Sac and a friend of IAMDDB, Lay has been combining her smooth flow with heavenly vocals to create a sound entirely of her own and it’s about time she got recognised for it.

Intact (Cradle Me)

This slick, soulful track has to be the first reason not to sleep on Lay. With Freddie Joachim on the beat and Vanessa Roth on the visuals, Lay’s vulnerability takes us on a journey and creates a rare vibe that makes this track one to remember. It’s the first song of Lay’s I came across, and it’s a true example of her skill set.

Know we now – Cul De Sac

One of four in Manchester’s up-and-coming Cul De Sac, Lay goes in hard on this one. Letting us know she’s just as fierce as she is conscious, she harmonises over the beat and hits us with a verse that completes this track. Big Fugees vibes on this one.

Bohemian Queen

Last but not least is ‘Bohemian Queen’, a stand-out track from her newly released mixtape; Colour Reaction. Through Bohemian Queen, Lay addresses “misconceptions of women and spirituality and what it means to be unconventional in today’s world”; it’s a smooth sound with a fierce message, part of a body of work that comes from the heart. Each song from Colour Reaction tells it’s own story of growth, love and gratitude – personal to Lay but universally relatable. The wisdom, insight and talent Lay projects into her work mean she’s definitely not one to sleep on. Here’s hoping 2018 is her come up year.

Get your tickets to catch LayFullStop live with us at Outlook Festival here and on the high seas on the Diplomats of Sound boat party here.

UKHH Summer Sickness: A Hip Hop Guide to Outlook Boat Parties

May 24, 2018 by Kieron Sullivan

Outlook Festival announced an impressive fleet of boat parties this week with tickets going on sale today. Here’s our pick of which excursions to sign up to for the best hip hop on the decks on the deck. Get on board!

Boom Bap:

WHAT TO EXPECT: “Expect party vibes start to finish. We have live acts but we’re about DJs laying down the perfect soundtrack for a boat party on the Adriatic Sea under the sunshine. Hip Hop, Trap, Grime, Jungle/DnB & everything in between.” (Ivan – Boom Bap)

LEVELZ:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Mayhem! The motley crew of MCs and DJs manning this ship/collective have been mad prolific straddling genres, crews and labels over the last few years with affiliations including The Mouse Outfit, Ape Cult and Blah Records. Expect the unexpected. LEVELZ releases have defied pigeon holes but often seen lyricists known for hip hop muscling their way into grime and beyond.

High Focus:

WHAT TO EXPECT: “The yearly High Focus Boat party at Outlook Festival has become the stuff of legends, not only is it one of the first to sell out every year, but I’ve been told by the organisers and the various sea captains that have taken us out over the years, that it’s by far the rowdiest one of them all… don’t miss out and hop on board! JEHEEEZZE!” (Molotov – High Focus)

Diplomats of Sound:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Perfect blends of Neo-Soul and Hip Hop with a Mancunian twist, LayFullStop and Children of Zeus bring the perfect summer sound track. Nostalgic soulful sounds with a new school twist and bars for days.

UKHH Summer Sickness: Outlook Festival

May 21, 2018 by Kieron Sullivan

We’re hyped to announce Outlook Festival as the second of our UKHH Summer Sickness recommendations! Renowned amongst festival goers for its unique heartbeat centred around sound system culture and all things bass, the four day event also has a long running history of cramming a tonne of UK hip hop talent onto its line-ups. Growing itself and its reputation steadily for over a decade, the combination of bass, Croatian sun, beaches, a giant abandoned fort and legendary boat parties, makes Outlook the obvious way to see off the summer with a bang!

To celebrate the Festival’s continued support of the UK hip hop scene and general reputation for sun-soaked insanity, UKHH will be hosting a bunch of related content leading up to and after Outlook. Expect features, interviews, line-up updates, exclusive on site bars and highlights of the event documented in HD.

No surprise that the line-up so far is already boasting an army of talent. UKHH ones to watch include Levelz and Friends, Ocean Wisdom, Children of Zeus, Peanut Butter Wolf, High Focus Records (Dirty Dike, Fliptrix, Jam Baxter, Coops, Ed Scissor, DJ Sammy B-Side, Molotov, Talos), Lady Leshurr, Nadia Rose, Kojey Radical, Melanin 9, Sonnyjim, Datkid, Pete Cannon, Gardna, Concept of Thought, Jman, LayFullStop, Free Wize Men and KinKai.

The carnage kicks off with an opening concert on the 5th of September followed by 4 days and nights of bass riddled goodness across 10 stages. For full line-up and tickets visit outlookfestival.com.
