AyiTe – formerly one half of hip hop duo Soul Purpose – drops some razor-sharp bars over grime-tinged beats in his follow up to 2019’s Smoke & Mirrors.
Filmed and produced at home during lockdown, ‘Practice/Preach’ shows AyiTe spitting before a kaleidoscopic wall of colours, intercut with images of street protests and religious imagery. But the North London rapper isn’t here to deliver a sermon. Instead, AyiTe explores universal themes of personal shortcomings, hard-earned lessons, and living up to your own high standards.
Despite being written and filmed months earlier, the visuals and subject matter for ‘Practice/Preach’ take on a deeper significance in the light of worldwide protests against police brutality and racism.
As the world grapples with questions of identity, culture and social responsibility, AyiTe is positioning himself as a sage, solid voice in UK hip hop. Watch this space.
